🎬 The “Pink Panther” from 1963 was not a cartoon series but a live-action comedy film that featured an animated cartoon character in its opening and closing credit sequences. The film itself centered on a notorious jewel thief and a bumbling inspector.
The 1963 film is a sophisticated comedy about a valuable pink diamond, called the “Pink Panther” because of a unique flaw within it that, when viewed closely, resembles a leaping pink panther.
The story follows the bumbling French police Inspector Jacques Clouseau (Peter Sellers) as he tries to catch the elusive, high-society jewel thief “The Phantom” (David Niven), whose true identity is Sir Charles Lytton. Both are in an Alpine ski resort, vying for the priceless diamond which belongs to a displaced princess.
The film is a romantic comedy and caper film, blending elegant settings and witty dialogue with physical comedy, which served to launch Peter Sellers into international stardom.
The animated Panther proved so popular that it spawned its own highly successful series of theatrical animated shorts starting in 1964 with The Pink Phink, which won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.
