Walter Hartwell White is the protagonist of AMC's Breaking Bad, created by Vince Gilligan.


Walter grew up in New Mexico and showed early brilliance in chemistry, co-founding a company called Gray Matter Technologies with his former partner Elliott Schwartz and Walter's then-girlfriend Gretchen. He sold his stake for a small sum before the company became hugely successful, a decision that haunted him for years.
Life before the show: By the time the series begins, Walter is 50 years old, working as a mild-mannered high school chemistry teacher in Albuquerque, moonlighting at a car wash to make ends meet. He's married to Skyler, with a teenage son, Walter Jr. (who has cerebral palsy), and a baby daughter, Holly, on the way.


Diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer, Walter turns to cooking methamphetamine to secure his family's financial future, partnering with former student Jesse Pinkman. His exceptional chemistry skills let him produce an unusually pure product, and under the alias "Heisenberg," he rises through the criminal underworld.
