Jason Todd grew up in the poorest, most dangerous part of a dark city called Gotham. His mother was a drug addict who died young; his father was a small-time crook who was murdered by one of the city's many villains. Jason survived by stealing what he could, sleeping where he could, and learning to fight dirty. One night, he tried to steal the tires off a fancy black car — which turned out to belong to Batman, the city's masked vigilante. Instead of sending him to jail, Batman saw something familiar in the angry, smart-mouthed kid. He took Jason in, trained him, and made him the new Robin — a boy wonder fighting crime alongside the Dark Knight.

For a while, it worked. Jason was more reckless and violent than the first Robin, but he was good at the job. Then everything fell apart. Jason went looking for his biological mother — a woman he'd never known — only to find she had sold him out to the Joker, Batman's most deranged enemy. The Joker beat Jason bloody with a crowbar in a cold, empty warehouse, then blew the building up with Jason still inside. Batman arrived too late. He held Jason's body in his arms and buried him in the rain.

But death didn't stick. Years later — thanks to a reality-altering event involving Superboy — Jason clawed his way out of his own grave, confused, traumatized, and furious. The resurrection left him unstable, and he discovered that the Joker was still alive, still killing, and Batman had never avenged him. That broke something inside Jason. He returned to Gotham as the Red Hood — a red-masked outlaw who uses guns, kills criminals, and operates in the gray areas Batman refuses to touch. To the rest of Batman's family, Jason is the tragedy that keeps happening. To himself, he's the one who learned the truth: that sometimes mercy is a lie, and the only way to stop monsters is to become a worse one.
