The guard house at the entrance to the Salang Tunnel must surely be one of the more isolated postings an Afghan soldier can find themselves having to endure. The 2.6km-long tunnel was built by the Soviet Union in the 1960s and is relied upon as the only north-south artery connecting the northern provinces with the capital, Kabul, that remains open year-round.
