Caption: A “step down program” enables an inmate serving an indeterminate SHU term to earn his way back to the general prison population or the sensitive-needs yard. Officials say gangs remain strong at Corcoran State Prison, with the Mexican Mafia being the largest.

In 2015, following a court settlement, the state said it would cease the practice of indefinite SHU terms and return nearly 2,000 inmates to the general population. Until recently, California was among a shrinking number of states that keep inmates isolated on the grounds of gang membership rather than behavior, at a time of increasing national criticism over the use of solitary confinement.

برای «فالو فرایدی» این هفته عکسی را از صفحه‌ی «اوری‌دی اینکارسِرِیشن» انتخاب کرده‌ایم که «باربارا دیویدسِن» ثبت کرده. توضیح: «برنامه‌ی «گامی به عقب» زندانی‌ای را که دوره‌ی نامعینِ اس‌اچ‌یو (انفرادی در زندان‌های آمریکا) را می‌گذراند، قادر می‌سازد تا دوباره به بند عمومی یا بندهای مربوط به جرم‌های خاص برگردد. مأموران می‌گویند گروه‌های مافیا در زنذان ایالتیِ کورکوران قدرت‌مند می‌مانند. مافیای مکزیکی‌ها بزرگترین‌شان است. در پِی دادگاهی که سال ۲۰۱۵ برگزار شد، ایالت تصمیم گرفت که دوره‌های نامعین انفرادی تعطیل شود و نزدیکِ ۲۰۰۰ زندانی به بند عمومی برگردند. تا چند وقتِ اخیر، کالیفرنیا در میان معدود ایالت‌هایی بود که در دوره‌ی افزایش انتقادهای داخلی از انفرادی، زندانی را بر مبنای دسته‌ای که به آن تعلق داشت نگداری می‌کرد تا رفتار.»
