Iran neither negotiating nor compromising on its national security: Khatibzadeh

Tehran (ISNA) – Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Saeed Khatibzadeh stressed that European countries must know that Iran is neither negotiating nor compromising on its national security and national interests.

Speaking at a weekly press conference on Monday, Khatibzadeh said, “Iran is fully aware of its rights and responsibilities and keeps reminds its partners of these two factors as well”.

Regarding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and recent remarks made by the German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas around the deal, the spokesman said, “Iran's stance on the nuclear deal is firm and unchangeable. We don’t see the need to renegotiate the provisions of the JCPOA. We will not re-negotiate what has already been negotiated”.

“The EU is the guarantor of the implementation of the JCPOA; though Germany as a European member of the deal has not been faithful to its commitments,” he added.

“If the US and EU fulfill all their obligations under the JCPOA, Iran will return to its commitments as well,” Khatibzadeh went on to say.

Touching upon Iran's cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), he said Iran will cooperate with the Agency as long as it sees no strategic mistake from the other side.

"Iran has been, and is, a faithful member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT)."

He also announced that Azerbaijani Foreign Minister, Jeyhun Bayramov will travel to Tehran on December 9.

“During the visit, the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister will meet with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani,” Khatibzadeh stated.

“We have great relations with both Azerbaijan and Armenia. I think the upcoming visit by Azerbaijani foreign minister to Tehran will facilitate bilateral cooperation. Hopefully, we will see visits by Armenian authorities to Tehran in near future,” he added.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Khatibzadeh stressed that Iran overtly welcomed the settlement of regional tensions and would welcome any political solution to the Persian Gulf crisis.

“Saudi Arabia has inappropriately treated its neighbors including Iran, Iraq, Qatar and Yemen. It must change track regarding bilateral and regional issues. That would benefit itself and the region,” he said.

“Saudi Arabia in an ordinary country in the region and it should know its limits,” the spokesman added.

Denouncing the “bullying policy” that Saudi Arabia and others adopted in imposing a blockade on Qatar, Khatibzadeh said,
